January brought with it more than snow. For the first time in a long time, January filled Maxineâs house with excitement as she planned her trip to Graceland. She waited until the last possible moment to tell her family that she was going. She was settled at Graceâs kitchen table the night before, sharing a rare cup of coffee with her daughter and granddaughter.
âGraceland?â Grace said, her mouth hanging open. âBy yourself? Mother, thatâs not like you.â
âI know,â Maxine said. âAnd donât try and talk me out of it. This is something Iâve wanted to do all my life. And now Iâm going to.â
âDoes Daddy know?â
âNo, and I donât want you to tell him. Heâll ruin it. I havenât had a vacation in years. I think itâs about time I got to do something I wanted.â
âDonât worry about Grampa,â Abbie said. âIâll check on him every day.â
Maxine patted her granddaughterâs hand. âYou donât have to do that, Abbie. He can take care of himself.â
âSounds like fun,â Abbie said. âIf I didnât have school, Iâd go along to keep you company.â
Maxine smiled at Abbie. âItâs a bus full of old people, honey; youâd be bored right out of your head.â
âMaybe.â Abbie shrugged. âBut at least you wouldnât have to go alone.â
âDonât you worry about me. Iâll be just fine.â Maxine stood and put her empty cup in the sink. âThanks for the coffee. I need to get home and start packing.â
âI canât believe youâre not going to tell Daddy,â Grace said.
Maxine bristled. âThe only reason Iâm telling you is so you wonât worry if you call the house and get no answer. Iâll be back in a week.â
âYou should tell him,â Grace said, âso he doesnât worry.â
Maxine pulled on her coat. âGrace. I rarely ask you for anything, and now Iâm asking you to keep your mouth shut. If your father finds out, heâll play sick and keep me from going.â
âHow are you getting to the bus?â Abbie asked. âMaybe I can take you. Does it stop by your house and pick you up?â
âNo,â Maxine said. âShirley and Helen are going to drop me off.â
âSo youâve already told them,â Grace said.
âYes,â Maxine said. âThey know.â
âWell, then.â Grace folded her arms across her chest. âHave a nice time.â
Maxine gave Abbie a hug. âI intend to.â
Once home, Maxine began to pack. In a perfect world, she would still be size twelve, and the clothes in her closet would fit. But her world was far from perfect, her body far from slim, so she settled on the few nice clothes she owned, most of them the hand-me-downs that Helen had given her before Christmas. Maxine would be gone a total of seven days, which meant sheâd have to wear several things more than once. She was tempted to toss in her comfortable sweats, but they were stained dingy gray, no longer their original pretty forget-me-not blue. If she were going to toss them anywhere, it should be the garbage.
âLook at the bright side, Maxine.â She unzipped a pair of pants and let them fall to the floor.
